Quick Guide

To get your document notarized in Texas, you must present an acceptable form of identification. The state requires your ID to be current, issued by a government agency, and contain your photograph and signature.

 

Acceptable Forms of ID

You can use any of the following unexpired documents:

• Driver's License: Issued by Texas or any other U.S. state.

• State ID Card: Issued by Texas or any U.S. state agency.

• U.S. Passport: Both passport books and passport cards are accepted.

• Foreign Passport: Must be readable and stamped by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

• U.S. Military ID: Official identification issued by the federal government.

 

Unacceptable Forms of ID

A notary cannot legally accept the following items by themselves:

• Expired IDs: Any identification that is past its expiration date.

• Birth Certificates: These do not contain a photograph or signature.

• Social Security Cards: Missing photo, physical description, and vital security features.

• Credit Cards: Even if they feature your photo and signature.

• Student IDs: School or university identification badges.

What if you don't have a valid ID?

If you lack a proper ID, Texas law allows the use of Credible Witnesses. You must bring either:

• One Witness: Someone who personally knows both you and the notary, and carries their own valid photo ID.

• Two Witnesses: Two people who personally know you, carry valid photo IDs, and can swear to your identity under oath.
